Could Ned Stark have been brought alive?

The Theory of Head Transplantation

By Utsav Thakur

Yes, you read it right. A ‘head transplant’ is an experimental surgical procedure involving the transplantation of the head of one organism onto another’s body. The recipient’s head may or may not be removed.

According to many, head transplantation is extraordinary & an impossible surgical procedure mostly thought to be fictitious. However, recent advances such as i) Ultra sharp neurological blades ii) Fusogens iii) Electrostimulation suggest that the first head transplantation may be feasible. We find references to the procedure in mythology in the stories of Lord Ganesh (The Elephant Headed God).

Aim: - Removal of the head from recipient and detachment of body from donor to perform transplantation of recipient’s head onto healthy donor’s body. Recently Xiaoping Ren et al reported the first cephalosomatic anastomosis in human cadaver, confirming the surgical feasibility, taking a time of about 18 hours.

Challenges: -

  1. Transplant rejection.

  2. The brain is dependent on the continuous flow of blood for O2, nutrients, and removal of waste products.

  3. Managing nervous system in both body and head.

HEAVEN: The head anastomosis venture Project outline for the first human transplantation with spinal linkage (GEMINI)

  • The Head is cooled and removed from the body.

  • The donor body is prepared. All cords and arteries must be severed simultaneously.

  • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) glue is used to connect the spinal cord, preserving nerve cell membranes.

  • The muscles, Trachea, and Esophagus are stitched together.

  • A plastic Surgeon sews up the skin.

Process of head transplantation.

Conditions qualifying for HEAVEN: -

The first patient should be young, suffering from a condition leaving the brain and mind intact with a devastating body like progressive muscular dystrophy, intractable neurological disorders, muscle wasting diseases.

The donor should be a young, brain-dead patient with healthy organs of the same height and matching immunotype.

History: - In 1908, Alexis Carrel collaborated with Charles Guthrie to graft the head of a dog onto an intact second dog. The transplanted head showed some reflexes initially but deteriorated quickly.

In 1954, Vladimir Demikhov performed the graft of the head & upper body with the front legs of a dog onto another dog. His aim was to provide blood supply to the donor head rather than grafting the nervous system.

In 1970, Robert J. White performed a monkey-head transplant focusing on blood vessel anastomosis. Deep hypothermia was induced to protect the brain. The transplanted head was able to function but due to the development of clots and a high dose of immunosuppressive drugs, the animal died.

In 2012, Ren grafted the head of a mouse onto another mouse body, his aim being to avoid harm from loss of blood supply.

In 2013, Sergio Canavero published a protocol to make human head transplantation possible.

To conclude, a head transplant has not been performed on a living human yet. But if it were possible, with the help of cloning we can create a newer version of us and perform a head transplant on the younger body with the more experienced (and older) mind, thus boosting our age by a significant number of years.

Had Game of thrones known about this technology, I’m sure that behind Joffrey’s back, someone would surely try this out to bring back Eddard Stark to continue his journey, and maybe the Red wedding wouldn’t have happened…

Here is a video from Dr. Canavero about how he plans on performing this feat.
